NCWIT Regional Initiatives: Regional Coordinator for Detroit, Michigan

NCWIT Regional Initiatives brings together programs powered by NCWIT and NCWIT Alliance members focused on increasing the influence and meaningful participation of girls and women from every community. Through this initiative, change-leading representatives from NCWIT and local partner organizations are united across the tech ecosystem, forming regional, action-oriented coalitions. Regional Coordinator Activities

The Regional Coordinator will work with the NCWIT Director of Regional Initiatives (located in Boulder Colorado) to help establish and maintain regional and coordinated impact efforts in Michigan, with a particular focus in urban Detroit. It is expected that this position would require 15-20 hours/ week. This position is funded for two years.

Specific activities in Detroit Michigan include:

  • Support the NCWIT Director of Regional Initiatives with cultivating regional partnerships and planning events.
  • Support the NCWIT Director of Regional Initiatives with outreach efforts and coordinating internship, apprenticeship and upskilling opportunities.
  • Coordinate local and regional press opportunities with NCWIT’s Director of Regional Initiatives, NCWIT’s Communication team, and other stakeholders.
  • Work alongside the NCWIT Director of Regional Initiatives and other NCWIT program managers from Aspirations in Computing, Aspire IT, TECHNOLOchicas, Counselors for Computing etc., on specific program logistical needs.
  • Assist NCWIT Director of Regional Initiatives and NCWIT Evaluation team with collecting desired outcomes data for evaluation reports.
  • Assist with interviews and evaluations of technical providers.
  • Assist with interviews of stakeholders from local and regional technical/ IT companies to determine skills gap and tech ecosystem landscape.
  • Work as a liaison between local and regional stakeholders and the Regional Initiatives project management team at NCWIT.

Skills Required

  • Intimate knowledge of regional community and needs with respect to tech/ IT education and upskilling
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders across the pipeline-- from K-12 educators and administrators, to post secondary faculty and institutions, through workforce development teams in industry.
  • Ability to organize, track and complete tasks in a timely manner, prepare for meetings, regularly communicate progress on tasks or issues impeding progress.
  • Accurate, clear written and oral communication skills, delivered in a responsive manner and the ability to ask questions when needed.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely from core NCWIT project management team while maintaining excellent time management; ability to anticipate program needs and attuned to opportunities to improve or streamline processes.

Skills Preferred

  • Knowledge and understanding of coordinated impacts and collective impact models
  • Technical aptitude and experience, including use of project management software

Additional Details

  • Travel up to 25%: Position may require travel in and around the state of Michigan.
  • 15- 20 hours/week
  • Compensation to commensurate with experience

NCWIT Academic Alliance & Regional Initiatives Project Manager (Contract Position)

NCWIT is a non-profit organization with more than 1,200 organizational members united in the mission of increasing the meaningful participation of girls and women in computing fields and careers. NCWIT’s Academic Alliance (AA) focuses on changing the local conditions that create barriers to attracting and graduating women in postsecondary computing by adopting and contributing research-based practices. The AA consists of more than 550 organizations with more than 2000 representatives all working to diversify computing at their institutions.

The Project Manager will manage the day-to-day operations of the Academic Alliance (AA) and assist the Director of Regional Initiatives. This role is highly collaborative and will work closely with other members of the NCWIT team, external AA member leadership and project teams, and other NCWIT staff. 

Consultant responsibilities include: 

Project Management

  • Develop, coordinate, and track project plans in Wrike (project management software); 
  • Maintain centralized files, potential client recruitment status, webpages and databases; 
  • Schedule, attend, and take notes on regular video-call meetings with internal and external team members; 
  • Manage the recruitment of AA member representatives to staff key committees, and manage communications among these remote, external work teams;
  • Work collaboratively with various NCWIT programs (e.g., Pacesetters, Extension Services, and Aspirations Collegiate Award) to support opportunities for AA member organizations and member representatives;
  • Keep member database and webpages up-to-date.

Annual NCWIT Summit AA Meeting Administration and Logistics

  • Manage logistics for the AA meetings at NCWIT’s annual Summit;
  • Manage selection and reimbursement process for AA members eligible to receive travel funding;
  • Coordinate the development of AA meeting script and slide deck, and other media;
  • Provide pre-meeting support for member representatives, including responding in a timely manner to questions regarding Summit meeting and registration;
  • Provide logistics and administrative support to AA Summit planning teams;
  • Ensure database of AA members is up-to-date so members will receive Summit invitations and badges will be printed correctly;
  • Attend NCWIT Summit and provide onsite management of all AA-related functions.
  • Invite institutions within 250 miles of Summit site to join the AA well in advance of the Summit.

Program Promotion

  • Collaborate with AA leadership and Communications Teams to keep web pages and one-pagers up-to-date, including drafting content, modifying site map, members page content, identifying visual content, etc.;
  • Work with NCWIT evaluators and researchers to create and disseminate annual AA member survey;
  • Manage the creation of newsletters for AA members, including an annual back-to-school newsletter;
  • Attend two to three conferences per year (such as SIGCSE, Tapia, Grace Hopper) to staff the NCWIT booth and manage any receptions or other onsite events.
  • Coordinate with NCWIT event planning staff to manage the NCWIT presence at SIGCSE via the collaborative “BPC” exhibit hall booth, including recruiting organizations working to broaden participation in computing at the post-secondary level to participate in the shared booth and managing the collaboration.
  • Assist regional initiatives director with research: Curating regional information, stakeholders, organizations, alliance members, educational policies, etc.
  • Assist with managing applications and inquiries for technical skills
  • Help with gathering data from program managers for quarterly reports and designing slides
  • Help with coordinating/ arranging meetings with stakeholders
  • Help with vetting technical skills providers- gathering the information needed in order to appropriately assess vendor.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Three years of program management or administrative support experience. 
  • Project management and project tracking experience.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software programs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team; excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask, change priorities when necessary, and follow through with all assignments.
  • Strong customer service skills, and experience providing customer service to diverse constituents.
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and technology platforms and tools.
  • Ability to work with and coordinate groups of people.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Wrike project management system.
  • Experience working with postsecondary faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives within a professional setting. 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Coursework or equivalent experience in the social sciences, especially topics of inequality and organizational change;
  • Experience working in a university or non-profit setting. 

This is a part-time contract position, up to 30 hours per week.
